The Young Liberals of Asia (YLDA) held its sixth leaders
workshop and its annual general meeting on 04-09 November 2009 in Kathmandu,
Nepal. The workshop, with the theme
“Globalisation: The Future of Asia” was a
joint activity with the
Liberal Youth South Asia (LYSA) through the support of the
Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Liberty.
The workshop’s theme was timely given the recent trends in
globalisation that have made Asian countries more relevant in the global
economy and have triggered significant economic progress for China and India.
The workshop aimed to address the challenges that faze Asian societies and help
them benefit from globalisation. Through the workshop, participants learned how
to help their organisations and countries benefit from globalisation.
Youth Initiative, a member organisation of both YLDA and LYSA,
hosted the activity and also organized an Asian Youth Forum, which was open to
local participants from within its network. Topics discussed were the
implications of the rise of China and the Indian model for success.
The workshop proper was facilitated by Mr. Rajendra Mulmi,
the immediate past president of YLDA, and Mr. Siegfried Herzog, Resident
Representative of Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Liberty Philippines.
Workshop topics included the history of globalisation, the
global trade system and the global financial crisis. Participants discussed
Asian culture amidst globalisation, worked on case studies on the human rights
situation of various Asian countries and watched a film by Johan Norberg.
Local resource persons were also invited to share
their expertise on workshop topics. This included Mr. Ratnakar Adhikari of the
South Asia Watch on Trade, Economics and Environment (SAWTEE) and Mr. Bishnu
Sapkota of the Asia Foundation.
The workshop culminated with the drafting and
approval of the YLDA-LYSA Declaration on Globalisation.
